Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a Self-Defense Martial Art created by brothers, Carlos, Gastao Jr, George, Oswaldo and Helio Gracie from Brazil in 1925. It is a beautiful art form based on grappling, locks, chokes, throws and a myriad of other submission techniques and ground fighting. Carlos was first taught by legendary Japanese Judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda who was also an accomplished grappler and catch wrestler.
Japanese Ju-Jutsu
Japanese Ju-Jutsu is the philosophy and strateg that a weaker, smaller opponent can defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, more aggressive opponent, even a violent dangerous opponent by utilizing leverage and weight distribution taking the fight to the ground, combined with submissions, joint locks and chokes to neutralize the threat.
The Gracie Brothers took all that they learned from the Japanese form of Ju-Jutsu and made it better. They perfected the art and took it to a whole other next level. Since the majority of fights wind up on the ground either on purpose or by accident, It made sense to create a Self-Defense that specializes in ground fighting, grappling defense and offese to give the smaller, weaker person an unfair advantage. On the ground, physical strength can be offset or enhanced through proper grappling techniques.
Braziliain Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the Combat Sport Version of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu started out as and will always be a Self Defense Martial Art but there are Millions of people on this planet that want to compete and train in Jiu-Jitsu whether as an amateur or professionally. “Sport” Jiu-Jitsu is regulated with rules, points similar to judo or wrestling in the aspect that it is for sport, it is for fun not designed for combat or survival in a real life attack.
Anyone that trains in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu knows how to “pull guard”, or “hip escape” or “sweep” but a lot of people that only train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu don’t know survival techniques, they can “roll” on the mat, ring or even a cage but they are lost in the real world on the street. They have no idea how to engage and neutralize someone swinging a knife or a baseball bat. They are clueless on how to handle multiple attackers or how to survive a mugging in the city. This is where Gracie Jiu-Jitsu thrives, why Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was developed for SURVIVAL.
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is by far the most powerful and dominant Martial Art ever created. This was proved on a global stage when in 1993, a skinny small Brazilian named Royce Gracie shocked the world in the first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) tournament when he defeated everyone, every single style competing with each. He fought much bigger and stronger opponents than he was but he easily took them down and submitted them, one after another. Royce Gracie & Gracie Jiu-Jitsu changed the world.
The UFC is currently one of the most watched combat sports in the world with massive commercial success in only 30 years MMA, specifically the UFC has taken over. But the true proof that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the #1 most effective Martial Art in the world is The fact that the United States Government, from the US Army, Marines, Navy SEALS, FBI, Secret Service, State Police, Local Police, Private security firms etc… all train their Elite Combat Soldiers, Special Forces, Federal Agents, Police in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu says a lot!
